Urban Education Certificate

The Urban Education Certificate program provides a hyper-focused understanding of the characteristics and cultural backgrounds of students who attend urban schools. You will learn how to foster meaningful connections between the educational goals of the schools and the personal and cultural experiences of young people from the central cities.

This program complements the graduate programs offered in the College of Urban Education by providing you additional professional knowledge and experiences that will enable you to function more effectively in urban educational environments.

Who is eligible for the certificate in urban education?

 
Prospective Teachers

  • Must have earned a bachelor’s degree
  • GPA requirement of 3.0 or higher
  • Successfully completed the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification subject area competency exam and basic skills requirements

Current teachers seeking new endorsements

  • Must have a current teaching certificate under the State of Michigan
  • GPA requirement of 3.0 or higher
  • Successfully completed the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification competency exams in new endorsement subject areas

Program Highlights

  • The program consists of seven courses and two field experiences, all of which can be completed in one year
  • Certificate provides additional experience without earning another degree
  • Increases your hiring potential with partner school districts
  • Coursework covers a variety of topics including classroom management strategies and educational psychology in urban environments
  • The program curriculum is part of the Master of Urban Education degree. Once the certificate is earned, you have the option to continue with the full master’s program.
